Miss Being Able to Move?

You can move pain free without surgery.

When speaking with my patients I’m often shocked at the level of physical limitations they accept for themselves. Many patients have not been able to reach overhead, or to turn their heads to see their blind spot, some haven’t been able to pick up a pen off the ground, for a decade or more!

 Get Moving, Pain FREE!

This unfortunate situation is rarely caused by degeneration or trauma. The cause is usually joints which are out of alignment. The good news is, in most cases, these misaligned and jammed up joints could be restored to nearly full function with a little work.

I had one severe case where a woman in her 80s was slated for a shoulder surgery and as a last resort her daughter brought her to me. After a careful assessment I performed a forceful glide of the humerus in the cavity. This immediately corrected the main problem; she was delighted to cancel her surgery! Five sessions of physio later and she was living a nearly pain-free and drug free life after suffering for years with pain. This was caused, partially, because of poorly done physio, osteo and chiro.

Pain = Damage (fix the damage)

I don’t blame the other rehab specialists. They did the best they could but when someone presents with a mechanical derangement or dysfunction, addressing pain is a poor long-term strategy. Pain is typically the consequence of damage

These days I’m asking my patients more and more as we reach the end of treating a specific problem; “Hey, how are you at reaching the back seat of the car?” or “How are you at holding a squat for 1 min?” Most of them have no idea.

 Treat Yourself

If you are moderately athletic, here are some movements you want to be able to do to ensure you have adequate function and prevent the need for treatment:

  1. pull ups

  2. squat

  3. lunge

  4. thoracic rot

  5. ball toss

Let’s take a look at some of these exercises in our next article.

Lose the Carbs, Gain Control
Taking control of what you eat can keep you out of the hospital.

Taking control of what you eat can keep you out of the hospital.

I live on a different planet sometimes (okay most of the time). Most of my friends are in health, fitness or some aspect of high performance. The overwhelming majority swear by paleo, low-carb, keto or a variant in that world. I know a handful of vegetarians but most actively track their nutrition.

The Challenge

Then I meet a real estate agent at a BNI group, just any average person and was reminded of a sobering fact. Most people are on a eat everything/anything diet, no restrictions, no supplements, no meal timing. Without being judgemental or harsh I want to take them by the lapels and tell them to wake up and that they are setting themselves up for a potential health crisis.

Why it Matters

Then I also remembered that 70% of Canadians are overweight or obese. 25% are type 2 diabetic and 7.1% of Canadians have Alzheimer’s. All of these disease have 0.6-0.8 correlation with eating a high carbohydrate diet

The Solution

Cut your carbs to below 80g/day and replace it evenly with protein and fat. Of course everyone’s metabolism is different so you will have to tinker with the macros until you find what works best for you. Be warned, the first week will be miserable. The best way to overcome this obstacle to success is to be prepared. Start your new eating habit (notice I didn’t say diet) on a Thursday or Friday so you can transition over the weekend and be well adapted by Monday, ready to take on the week.

Given the strong correlation with what we eat and horrible diseases such as: diabetes, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and more, we need to control what we eat in order to give ourselves better odds of enjoying good health and vitality well into our golden years.

To sum up, lose the carbs and gain control of your health!

PS (for those of you who are trying to build lean muscle, and who isn’t)

Get a Crock-Pot and a George Foreman grill.

Why?

Because you hate to cook and you need to. Fill the crock pot with any roast or fish and all the leaves and roots you can stuff in it. Then add some spices and let the thing run. You will have epic stews, soups, roasts and chilis which will make your gains easy.

Take some meat or fish, add spices, throw it on the grill.

Slam out 26 of your 28 meals.

Boom!

Activate Your Muscles!
Muscle pain can be serious, get it checked!

Muscle pain can be serious, get it checked!

Getting a muscle to fire is a complex process. It requires nerves, muscles, fascia, bones, tendons and ligaments all be a tightly coordinated bundle with everything in alignment, and even then, sometimes things go wrong.

Here’s the Science

Once acetylcholine bridges the gap between the muscle and the nerve, a chemical reaction occurs, and the motor unit contracts the muscle. Making sure the motor units fire in sequence, recruit muscles evenly and give sensory feedback is part of a rehab professionals job. They can be; physiotherapists, osteo therapists, massage therapists or acupuncturists, but they need to make sure the nerves are firing correctly.

What We Know

Our understanding of the central and especially peripheral neurology is poor on a good day. Not much research has been devoted to this area and most of our dollars wind up in orthopedic research. Retraining the muscles to fire properly typically involves hours of training to get the sequence to pattern correctly.

What to Do

If your muscles aren’t working correctly or you have strange or impaired sensation, get it checked out. It might by an easy fix by a therapist.

The SECRET to Success!
What’s your secret to success?

What’s your secret to success?

Today on YouTube you can load up on an infinite amount of psych up speeches, motivational music tracks, and all the mindset work you can handle.

Is this stuff useful even helpful? Of course, there days we all need an attitudinal “pick me up”

Here’s the Secret

Here’s the secret many of my clients tell me and is of utmost importance when you want to take on a more active and assertive role in your own life. It could be as a businessperson, a coach, an athlete, a parent or any other kind of role.

This secret is discipline. I wasn’t even aware of how disciplined I was until my fiancé recently remarked that she has never seen me, even once miss my alarm or hit the snooze button. Between how my parents raised me and the lifestyle I chose, discipline was baked into my psyche. Come to think of it, a few years ago while working 14 hour shifts for three weeks in a row, I probably did hit snooze a few times. Towards the end I wasn’t a great person and needed to find extra minutes of sleep.

Seriously though, this conversation got me talking to clients and friends and I discovered that many of us hit the snooze button a little too much. Almost all need music, coffee, stimulants and a lot of self-talk to take on an 8-hour day. I’m taking on 12-hour days, on the regular, with nothing but a cup of coffee and pure aggression. I honestly had no idea this was abnormal.

“The harder you are on yourself the easier life will be on you.”

Author unknown.

Discipline yourself and your life will be better. Keep in mind, this is a 1% game. You don’t go from lazy guy on the couch to world champion MMA fighter in a week, it took George St. Pierre 15 years to get there.

Simple Tip

  • Get up 15min earlier

  • Drink 1 cup of coffee less

  • Work 1 hour more

  • Get to the gym 1 extra time this week

  • Do it!

Success is about trying harder and more frequently than anyone else and learning from your failures. If you don’t try more things than anyone else the likelihood that you win is less. Pick which habits you want to work on and set 15 min aside and get it done.

“Discipline builds empires and unconstrained hedonism builds swamps.”

Find a story in your ancestry that is told at every major get together, that uncle who fought in the war, that grandparent who started a business in a new country, remember the people you come from and who had less lived a disciplined life and achieved more. If they did it; you can do it too.

I believe in your power, now you have to!
